Monday 15Th Dec 2008

The Internet is so expensive and I have so much to tell but now I have my lap top (thank you mum and dad and Nik) I'm going to up date my blog finally !!!!!

So where to begin I'll start from when I was in Sydney ….

…..4th Nov Not very hot day, Spoke to mum and dad on the phone Mum was in London and Dad was in the kitchen so it was very weird having a 3 way conversation from Australia, London and Gosbeck but really good to hear mum and dads voices.
Had been looking at apartments to stay in not very successful.
Found a lovely Pasta restaurant on George st Had the most amazing fish and veg , its hard to eat decent food out here as every where is kebabs or Chinese food cant find a jacket potatoes any where in Sydney eating is a bit of a nightmare…… well for healthy food anyway.
I met a lovely New Zeland couple who recommended a shopping outlet called DFO though Id love to go shopping I cant really afford it L I will bare it in mind.
Next couple of days I spent just trying to sort out accommodation for the next few weeks, I booked to go in to the YHA hostel from the Friday 7th Nov stayed there 3 nights.
This is where I met Jackie, My roomie such a lovely lady we got on really well, she is from New Zeland but has been living in Brisbane for the last few years.
We had a right laugh together including walking down to the Opera House and going to Newtown Festival it’s been really hot in the last few days.
* Jackie

On Sunday the 9th I went down and found the Church by the bridge I wasn’t in time for the service but I managed to get some good pics of it.
*

My next stop was to stay in the Wake up hostel, I stayed in a 10 bed mixed dorm. Here is where I met Ged, Jo, Charlotte, Laura Shelbourne, Laura Michelfeig and Mark superb guys we had some extremely funny times.

People came and went from this room but these guys were in this room all the time I was there apart from Charlotte who went off for adventures down the East coast on the 16th and we missed here loads when she went.

Me and Charlotte went to Palm Beach with Ged as he had a job interview as a chef (which he got) we called this palm beach take 1….. this is where Home and Away is filmed.

Friday 14th Nov

Went to Tarronga Zoo over at Mainly on the ferry with Charlotte and Laura M.
*

Met Romanas he stayed in our room for a couple of days and Cameron.

I checked out of the wake up on Monday the 17th to go and check in 790 on George this is where Tim is staying. We have both been looking for jobs, Its not as easy as you would think trying to get a job in Sydney it seams that every one is doing the same thing.
I cut Anne Marries Hair (the Irish couple staying in tims room) Have decided not to go in to a salon hairdressing after a very interesting conversation with a gal Nicky from the wake up who had told me of lots of horror stories of salons that she had tried to work in they really don’t have a clue in some of the salons and most of the time the owners are not even qualified …… some of the hair cuts people come out with especially the men are not good trust me I’ve seen it with my own eyes …..you ask for an inch off and your left with an inch all over!!!!!!!

The first night I stayed in the George as in a 6 bed female dorm I met Nadine. Also a girl had had her handbag stolen from the global internet café She was on a round the world tour but as it had had her passport in it had to cut the trip short , I really felt for her, I'm beginning to realise that Sydney is just a city after all and to be so very careful now.

I’ve applied for loads of jobs but not heard back from any as yet, Tim Has a job again now I don’t know how he does it?

The next room I was in was another 6 bed female dorm Room 409 (remember this room its where we had the BB’s but I’ll come back to that!)
I met the Fabulous Girls, Kate aka Dr Davenport loll, MJ, Charlotte the Princess and Grouna.. Nadine was also staying in this room for 1 more night.
I had spoken to a guy called Simon who told me of his journey down the east coast in a campervan, this conversation made up my mind so I went a booked a campervan to rent at the wake up Hostel on Friday the 21st Nov after Dragging Nadine round half of Sydney the previous day looking in hostels for campervans to buy and finding rental companies.
The 21st was also Palm Beach take 2. went with Nadine on the bust journey 2hrs !!! and met up with Jo (who was going back to England) Cameron Mark, Ged, Laura and Gamma.
Me mark and Ged swam or rather just kept getting knocked over by the waves in the sea very funny.
We went to the surf club but alas didn’t see Alf Stuart.

Sat 22nd Nov

Finally got a call from a job (then I got like 20 calls of other jobs the same day for interviews TYPICALL) It was for PRTA soon to become P.A.R.T.Y (long story)
This was the place that Laura S works at promoting Love your garden !!!
Me and Kate got a job there Promoting water efficient shower heads for Sydney water and free aerators and flow regulators in your kitchen and bathroom taps also fixing any MINOR leeks that you may have lol lol I can almost say the script off the top of my head.
The Hrs didn’t turn out to be as good as we thought they would be (not as many hrs as id like but I cant complain it’s a job after all !!!
Started on the Monday 24th.
Mostly work from then so not to much to tell other than me and Kate have started swimming every day in an Olympic size pool Oh and to explain about the bb’s in room 409……otherwise know as yep gross BED BUGS We had to move rooms as all us girls have been bitten or rather eaten alive Charlotte and Grouna being bitten the worst.
The hostel paid for all our clothes to be dry cleaned but still it was a day of our lives waited going all the way to the laundrettes known as Laundromats here and taking our bags out for a walk in the sun to get rid of any thing that might be in them, all in all quite traumatic!
Me and Kate got put in a room together 306 and the other girls in another room 203.

Friday the 5th

I moved in to another room next to the other girls 204 as Nick will be here on Saturday.
I took down the poster that I had put up for hairdressing and my phone went mad for people wanting hair cuts it seams that people though I was there permanently and when they knew I was going panicked lol Friday afternoon and evening I was hairdressing the whole time.

Saturday 6th Dec 2008

Went to the airport for 7:30 am and met Nick off the plane and caught the train back to the Hostel to drop the bags off and then we went for a wonder around Sydney to the Opera House and through the botanical Gardens and Hyde Park and then back the hostel after picking up some shopping and made pasta and surprisingly
it wasn’t a PASTA DESASTER lol
Nick met Tim for the first time and had his first experience of goon (this is wine in the box . Goon is a big thing out here)

Sunday 7th Dec

We got up around 9am and went to Darling Harbour it was raining today but even when it rains its still hot. We went to the Aquarium and WE FOUND NEMO !!!
** and Dory !

Me Tim and Nick, met up with Ged, Laura and Gem as they wanted to say good bye, I really hope it wont be the last time I see them.

Monday 8th Dec

We got up 5am it was a killer especially as Nick was a bit jet Lagged and caught a plain to Cairns where we picked up our Campervan. YES IM GETTING OUT of Sydney….
After a 3 hr plane flight we arrived in Cairns and boy IT IS SO HOT up here I cant even tell you, its like even to hot to wear just a bikini.!
We started to head up North from Cairns towards Cape Tribulation, Stopping at Cairns beach on the way to have an Ice cream.
Our first stop was Trinity Beach to have a paddle whilst people were looking at us like we were crazy we soon found out why when we saw a sign further up the beach saying BEWARE MARINE STINGERS with a big bottle of vinegar attached to it, turns out it is Jelly fish season and you should keep away from the water.
*

We then drove to Mossman and had a look around and carried on to Wonga Beach where we stayed for the first night, walked along the beach before having showers.
I had a lovely big fat toad and a cockroach come and have a shower with me ……I wasn’t scared….Honest !!! Nick how ever just had a few lizards to contend with…..!

Tuesday 9th Dec

OH my Days ……. Its just so so hot. Though I’m not complaining I have never experienced heat like it. Its very humid at around 33 – 35 degs C here and we are going to head further up in to the rain forests which will be even hotter.
Wonga Beach is bliss we were parked right by the beach under palm trees and have seen so much wild life already here and apparently there is a 10 ft Komodo Dragon that roams through the park but unfortunately we didn’t get to see him
How ever on our walk along the beach we did see a dead stinger *
And met a lovely welsh chap that gave us an Electric lead so kind we couldn’t have go by with out it.
We set off to Cape Tribulation and caught the ferry over a very small river
*
Our first stop was a walk trough Daintree National Park (Rain forest) it was extremely beautiful. After taking a few more photos we carried on towards Cape Tribulation and stopped at Alexandra Bay, Thornton Beach where we stopped for a cold beer and saw the biggest spider we ever seen, before taking a long walk down the beach. Breathtaking! We stumbled across a big crab hiding under the rocks and on the way back to the camper van loads of baby crabs were popping out from beneath the sand. Then nick went behind the wheel for the first time in an automatic. Scary!
We drove to the river took the ferry back into Mossman, stayed at Riverside Leisure park, had a BBQ then showered with worlds largest beetles. It was cooler then the night before but still too hot to even have a sheet over us.

Wednesday 10th December
Last night jo got bitten alive. We had breakfast then went for a swim, I nearly died after two lengths haven’t swam in years. WELL UNFIT! Haha (extra long swimming pool though). After we packed up we headed to Mossman gorge. Jo swam in fresh water gorge, we got harassed by a big bright blue butterfly, and I paddled and took photos. Some girls were feeding the fish in the gorge the park ranger told them off as it’s a nation park and it upsets the natural balance. After more walking through rainforest we decided to go back to the car and carry on with our adventure. Palm cove was our next stop. Arrived at the site around 6ish surrounded by Baby toads urgh!! And giant green tree ants. Had stir fry for dinner mmmm very tasty. Took a nice walk down the peer in bed for 9pm STILL RED HOT!!.

Thursday 11th December
Went to Mareeba. On the way stopped off at Barron Gorge, Kurunda. Walked over a long bridge over the river. Saw a waterfall called surprise creek wasn’t doing much, not a lot of water as wet season had passed. We went into the information centre watched a video of on the Barron Gorge in wet season, very different and pretty scary loads of water flows down the river during the wet season. We picked up a map from the guy in the information centre which showed us how to get to Barron Falls. When we got there we saw the falls from a wonderful viewpoint, amazing view of the waterfall but again it was only a trickle. We got to Mareeba, jo finally bought some decent shorts, she was very happy. The lady in the shop told us where to go and wrote down some places.(most Australian people are very friendly and always happy to help and giving advice) We took the campervan down Gillies Highway to Lake Tinaroo. Arriving in Kairi (hick town, out in the sticks more inland than where we’ve been staying) we bravely set up camp (non powered site) for the night. Very cool night saw lightning in the distance in bed for 8pm we even used the duvet.

Friday 12th December
We woke up at 5:45am slept like lazy logs. Had breakfast then set off to lake tinaroo. Stopped off at the lookout point over lake tinaroo, then took the forest drive round the lake which seemed to go on forever. Still very beautiful. We then drove to the volcanic craters, Lake Burrine and Lake Eacham. The first lake was Burrine, Jo had tea and scones I had the tastiest bacon and egg sandwich in the world. Down the road not too far was Lake Eacham, we both went for a swim the water was gorgeous very clean. The water made our skin feel very soft and Jo’s hair very silky. We met a Danish guy in the lake swimming. He told us about Mt Hypipamee another crater, so we packed up and set off via Malanda, where the girl in the petrol station gave us directions to get there. We drove for a bit heading to the crater on the way we saw another lookout point looking over a swamp in the middle of a field, very nice landscapes. We finally got to Mt Hypipamee and took some amazing photos of the big hole and jo swam in a little waterfall (Dinner Falls) not too far from the crater.
We then headed to Milla Milla falls, there was a wedding ceremony which looked a bit surreal, ne ways jo still wanted to swim in the water even though she was petrified of what could be in the there. She went for a dip and swam out with the children already playing in the water. Later we drove towards Innisfail down the Palmerston Highway, stopping off at Cowley beach, took more photos then carried on to Mission Beach where we stayed the night. Took a walk on the beach, tried taking photos of the moon as It was a full moon and it was the closest its been to Australia in 30 years!! We couldn’t be bothered cooking that night so we decided to grab a pizza, Mexicana. Not sure why we chose that one it was red hot making our mouths burn adding to the heat outside. haha

Saturday 13th December
We got up very early not sure what time, we’ve lost all concept of day and time, its really nice to lose track of everything. We just chilled this morning as we did so much yesterday and drove loads. Jo cleaned out the camper van and gave me a quick beard trim, hair grows so fast out here. We charged our cameras, I wrote my essay for university. We went for a walk on mission beach took photos of the beach. We got chairs out of the van took them to the beach and sat in the shade as it far too hot to sit in the sun. after leaving mission beach we set off to Townsville, this time jo decided to be adventurous and taking us down a never ending road 50 km long towards Tully Gorge. Which we then had to drive all the way back as it was the only road to go down. We saw Hinchinbrook Island taking even more photos. Stopped off in Halifax (more photos) Arrived in Toobanna, Francis Creek. A lovely free stop off, so it seemed…until we found it was Absolutely crawling with little monsters and killer toads. After been attacked by giant stick insects whilst trying to cook chilli, which we nearly gave up on a hundred times as we just wanted to get back in the van, as we were petrified. Jo spilt the rice we’d been waiting for and wanted to cry. To make matters worse I had a giant toad on my foot trying to wash out the pan.

Sunday 14th December

Jo got up at 5am and drove to Townsville whilst I slept in the back driving passed Christmas Creek. We arrived in Townsville around 7:30am and had a lovely day. Spoke to an Australian guy fishing on the peer near the rock pool who recommended going to Magnetic Island which we can see in the distance in front of us. So think we’re going to head to Horseshoe bay on Magnetic Island tomorrow. We went for a swim in the rock pool as its safer then swimming in the sea or sea nets during jelly fish season. We went to ANOTHER information centre, were jo picked up another thousand maps and broachers (bit of standing joke between us, we call it “the big I”) the lady in their was really nice and told us the frogs we saw weren’t actually frogs but poisonous toads and gave us info on the stingers in the sea. She recommended the caravan park, Rowes Bay on the beach front, where she works on nights. We set up camp for the night and got chatting to a couple Dave and Jane, who lent us washing powder and pegs so we could do washing and told us about a tropical storm that was heading this way. During our BBQ and after we just hung the washing out, the storm hit us. We managed to get everything back in the van just in time, but then decided to run out in the middle of the storm and take photos undercover. It was awesome!

Monday 15th December

Trying to sort out this blog allday !!!!!!!!
